Introducion:

The FORBES WOMAN campaign was an initiative idealized by the very talented creative team at Ogilvy Brasil for the Forbes magazine, and I was lucky enough to be invited by them to create the CGI images for it. The idea was to create the female versions of some of the most famous billionaires in the world and show (according to most recent forbes researches) how much less they would have earned compared to their real life male versions.

In terms of CGI this project was challenging not only in getting the realism just right (and that was essential for the campaign to work) but in changing the faces enough to make them feminine, but not too much so that they would lose the likeness. That required a lot of research not only on the real life subjects being portrayed, but in the small differences that make us associate faces with the male and female genders. Basically making the chin and neck a little finer, eyes a tiny bit bigger, and the nose a bit smaller. In the end it was a process of experimentation and trial and error until we got exactly the aspect we wanted.

Modelling:

Even though I started the first model from scratch, I tried to get the best UV and topology I could possibly get from it so that I could use the same base model and some of the textures in the 3 faces optimizing time in the production. It was very important to get the loops going around the eyes, mouth and nose just right, and have enough polys and uv area around the eyes. That's because Slim and Gates have more skin area up their eyes than Zuckerberg and I couldn't afford any texture stretching going on there. Also, a good topology helps a lot modelling fine details, while a bad one only gets in your way.

While I always rely on zbrush to do most of the organic modelling, when I get to the fine likeness stage I go back to modo and use it`s real world camera to get there. I use 3 or 4 images of the subject from different angles, set them as background images in my cameras and try to set the lens and their positions matching the photos. That way I have references overlapping the model from many angles and it get's a lot easier to see if my model is right.

I`ts also fundamental to have one photo that s going to be your main reference, since it will be impossible to match all of them 100%.

Skin Texturing:

Here I start of by building the main color map in mari by projecting photos. I was able to use mainly the same map on Gates and Slim, one that I created using photos I took from my father`s face here at the studio using a very flat light and avoiding shadows and highlights. For Zuckerberg I used polarized images from TextureXYZ they are cleaner and already prepared for projecting. Both methods work very well.

I also created the porosity using textureXYZ maps, they have great tutorials on their page showing how to project their images for secondary, tertiary and micro displacements at once using mari. I also use the secondary map set as oil reflection amount, so that the pores are less reflective than the rest of the skin.

Now once I have the map for Diffuse colour and all the subdermal layers created from it (one more red for the lower dermal layer, one more yellow for the upper dermal layer and one grayer for the epidermis SSS) It`s time to get them working just right, and I think that`s the trickiest part.

My solution to get some good reference and know where I want to get in terms of shading is to take a photo of a subject with a skin that`s similar to my model`s (for Gates and Slim it was my father again) here at the studio using the light that I want in my final render. Then I use this studio setup to generate an HDR file and use it to light my model. Now, my father`s photo has the same light as my 3D model, and I know exactly how my 3D skin should react to this environment. With this solid reference all I have to do is tweak my shader until the SSS and porosity looks just like the photo.

Eyelids and eyebrows:

The eyes always require special attention and that also goes for the eyelids and eyebrows. Here I like to place the guides manually to make sure they behave exactly like they do in the reference. I also like to use at least 2 layers of fur in the eyebrows, one for the main hair and the other one for the thin and subtle hair that grows around the eyebrows, and give a more natural feel to it.

Hair:

Since the hair of the three would be different then their hair in real life, we found that producing the hair with photography would be faster and achieve the result we were going for in a more efficient way reaching our clients needs in terms of deadline. So here all we had to do was taking photos of models with hair that looked just right using the same studio settings we used to create the HDR we lit the model with.
